Passing Variables To A Fragment

I am trying to pass a variable into a fragment. Here is how I am calling the fragment:
FragmentTransaction transaction = getFragmentManager().beginTransaction();
transaction.add(R.id.container, new FavoritesFragment());
transaction.commit();

I am trying to pass a String in to the fragment using getActivity() but it is returning null. I can’t seem to figure out what I am doing wrong. Thanks!
