The first version of AutoCAD, called AutoCAD Level I, was released in December 1982. Its major advantage over competing programs was its ability to create 3-D graphics. It was written entirely in assembly language, and ran at a speed of 8.6 microseconds per instruction. It was designed for 16-bit MS-DOS 2.0 computers.

AutoCAD Modeler

In February 1983, AutoCAD Modeler was released. It was also written in assembly language, and replaced Level I. Modeler was released for MS-DOS, Atari, and IBM PC, with the PC version running at speeds of 200, 300, and 400 Mhz, respectively.

AutoCAD 2 was released in 1984. It was first distributed as a large 4.7MB floppy disk. It could draw up to three times faster than the previous release, and was released in MS-DOS, and also in the 68000-based Amiga platform.
